Terry Moran Doubles Down After ABC Ouster

Recently fired ABC News Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran is speaking out about the late-night tweet that ended his three-decade career in mainstream journalism — and he says he has no regrets.

Moran, a longtime presence in political coverage, joined The Bulwark’s Tim Miller to reflect on the firestorm that followed his now-infamous post describing Trump aide Stephen Miller as a “world-class hater” whose “hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.” The tweet triggered sharp backlash from conservatives — including Vice President J.D. Vance — and led ABC to terminate Moran just two days later for what it called a clear violation of ABC News policies.

Miller pressed him — half-jokingly — on whether it was a “drunk tweet.” Moran laughed off the suggestion but acknowledged the emotional force behind the post. “It was something that was in my heart and mind,” he said. “I used very strong language deliberately.”

Mediaite reports:

Moran explained it was just a regular night, he put “the kids to bed. We were up for a little while. It was not a rock and roll wild night. It was a normal family night. And then I got in the bed and I thought, what was that? And I typed it out and I looked at it and I thought, that’s true. And I hit send.”

“I’m not that liberal,” Moran insisted during the interview. “I’m a proud centrist — the most despised political tribe in America.” He identified with the legacy of Hubert Humphrey: pragmatic, decent, and morally driven. “Someone like Stephen Miller… is degrading all that,” he added.

Interestingly, while Moran spoke at length about what he described as Stephen Miller’s “vitriol” and degradation of public discourse, he had far less to say about the toxic climate within his own industry. For the past decade, legacy media outlets — including ABC — have poured relentless criticism and ridicule on Donald Trump and his supporters, often with open disdain. Major anchors, pundits, and even supposed straight-news reporters have adopted adversarial tones, fueling perceptions of bias and partisanship.

This hostility has coincided with a collapse in trust and viewership. According to Gallup and Pew data, trust in mainstream media is at record lows, and audiences are increasingly turning to alternative outlets or tuning out entirely. Some might view Moran’s impassioned critique of Miller as sincere — but others may see it as part of the very problem that has alienated millions of Americans from corporate media.

Moran also referenced former President Trump’s claims during the 2024 campaign — including the allegation that Haitian migrants were “eating neighborhood pets” in the Midwest — and said those narratives “poison the country’s moral fabric.”

“I want to go back to Springfield, Ohio, and talk to the Haitian community there,” he said. “There are real stories that matter more than the noise.”
