President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the Texas Republican Senate primary should come to a swift conclusion, urging the candidate who does not receive his endorsement to exit the race once he announces his decision.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump said he plans to announce his endorsement in the coming days and argued the party must quickly unify ahead of the general election.
The Texas GOP primary advanced to a runoff this week after neither Attorney General Ken Paxton nor Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) secured a majority of the vote. The runoff election is scheduled for late May.
Trump, who had declined to endorse during the initial primary contest, said the prolonged fight could distract Republicans from defeating the Democratic nominee in November.
“The Texas Republican Senate Primary has been very interesting to watch,” Trump wrote, before arguing that the contest should now be settled.
“The Texas Republican Senate Primary cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer,” Trump wrote.
“IT MUST STOP NOW! We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively! Both John [Cornyn] and Ken [Paxton] ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT!”
Trump added that once he announces his endorsement, he will ask the candidate he does not back to immediately suspend their campaign.
“My Endorsements within the Republican Party have been virtually insurmountable! It is such an honor to realize and say that almost everyone I Endorse WINS, and wins by a lot, especially in Texas!” he wrote.
“I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE! Is that fair? We must win in November!!!”
The runoff was triggered Tuesday after Paxton and Cornyn finished as the top two candidates but neither crossed the 50 percent threshold required to win the nomination outright. Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas), who had also been competing for the nomination, did not advance to the second round.
Trump previously said he maintained good relationships with all three candidates, which was one reason he chose to stay neutral during the first round of the primary.
His eventual endorsement, however, could prove decisive. Trump’s backing has often played a major role in Republican primaries, particularly in Texas, where his influence among GOP voters remains strong. In recent election cycles, candidates endorsed by Trump have frequently surged in polling, fundraising, and turnout among Republican primary voters.
Because runoff elections typically draw smaller and more ideologically motivated electorates, endorsements from high-profile figures like Trump can have an even larger impact on the outcome. If Trump ultimately backs one of the two remaining candidates, it could significantly reshape the race before Texans head back to the polls in May.
