Several top Republicans are challenging Trump’s Senate pick despite his endorsement.
President Donald Trump gave newly appointed Sen. Darline Graham his “complete and total endorsement.” Under normal circumstances, that might have been enough to freeze the Republican field.
Instead, the opposite happened.
Within days, several of South Carolina’s best-known Republicans either launched campaigns or openly explored bids, setting up what could become one of the GOP’s biggest primary battles of the 2026 election cycle.
Trump’s endorsement isn’t clearing the field
Rep. Ralph Norman and Rep. Russell Fry have officially entered the race, choosing to challenge Trump’s preferred candidate rather than step aside. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette is also weighing a campaign, although Rep. Nancy Mace has ruled herself out.
Candidate filing for the Aug. 11 Republican special primary opened Tuesday and closes July 28.
The winner will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election to serve the remainder of the Senate term through January 2033.
Graham begins her campaign
Appearing on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Graham said she decided to seek a full term after consulting with family, friends and President Trump.
“I’ve got peace about it,” she said, adding that she hopes to continue serving South Carolina while honoring her late brother’s legacy.
Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham earlier this month after Sen. Lindsey Graham died from a ruptured aorta. Her appointment made history, making her South Carolina’s first female U.S. senator.
One of the first big political tests of 2026
The race is already taking on national significance.
Trump remains the dominant figure inside the Republican Party, but Norman and Fry are hardly political unknowns. Both have spent years building conservative records and now appear ready to argue they’re better positioned to carry the America First banner.
For Republican strategists, the contest is about more than one Senate seat. It’s an early measure of how much Trump’s endorsement can shape competitive primaries when voters are presented with multiple well-known conservative alternatives.
With candidate filing now underway and the Republican primary just weeks away, South Carolina has become one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races. The outcome will offer one of the earliest indicators of Trump’s political influence heading into the 2026 midterms — and whether his endorsement outweighs the established conservative records and name recognition of experienced Republican lawmakers.
