President Donald Trump weighed in this week on the controversy surrounding actress Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle jeans commercial, mocking critics and defending the ad as a hit — especially after learning Sweeney is a registered Republican.
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there,” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social. “It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney!”
The American Eagle commercial, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” features the 27-year-old actress explaining, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color.” The camera then cuts to her saying, “My jeans are blue.” The ad ends with the tagline: “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
While some viewed the campaign as a lighthearted wordplay, left-leaning commentators accused the company of promoting coded references to “eugenics” and “whiteness” due to the dual meaning of “genes” and Sweeney’s appearance as a blonde white woman. One MSNBC panel claimed the ad represents “an unbridled cultural shift toward whiteness.”
Trump dismissed the criticism outright and used the moment to take another jab at what he refers to as the “woke agenda.”
“Being WOKE is for losers,” Trump said, doubling down in a follow-up statement. “The tide has seriously turned — Being Republican is what you want to be.”
He also took aim at other companies he says have suffered from embracing progressive messaging, referencing Jaguar’s recent ad campaign and linking it to reported struggles.
“Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil,” Trump wrote. “Shouldn’t they have learned a lesson from Bud Light, which went Woke and essentially destroyed the company… BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SO FOOLISHLY LOST.”
Trump’s remarks on the Sweeney ad came after a reporter informed him of her political affiliation during a press interaction in Allentown, Pennsylvania. “Is Sydney Sweeney a Republican? That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that,” Trump responded. “Now I love her ad.”
Public records reviewed by The Guardian confirm that Sweeney has been registered as a Republican voter in Florida since June 2024.
American Eagle issued a statement in response to the backlash, refusing to back down or apologize.
“‘Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the company stated. “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Vice President JD Vance also addressed the controversy during a recent appearance on the Ruthless Podcast, mocking the outrage from Democrats and progressive commentators.
“My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi,” Vance said. “That appears to be their actual strategy.”
He continued, “You have a normal, All-American beautiful girl doing a normal jeans ad. They’re trying to sell jeans to kids in America, and they [Democrats] have managed to so unhinge themselves over this thing. Did you learn nothing from the November 2024 election?”
Sweeney has not publicly commented on the uproar surrounding the ad. However, her commercial continues to circulate widely online, gaining attention not only for its content but for the cultural clash it has ignited.
