Trump Removes IRS Commissioner After Less Than Two Months On The Job

President Donald Trump has removed Billy Long as Internal Revenue Service Commissioner, ending his tenure less than two months after his Senate confirmation. The White House offered no official reason for Long’s sudden dismissal.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will serve as Acting IRS Commissioner until a permanent successor is nominated and confirmed.

Long, a former Republican congressman representing Missouri’s 7th District, was confirmed in mid-June 2025.

His appointment followed a period of instability at the IRS, where multiple acting commissioners cycled through the role in rapid succession.

The Hill has additional details:

Long was confirmed in June in a 53-44 party-line vote, with all Democrats voting in opposition to his confirmation. Long is a strong ally of President Trump, but he drew criticism from Democrats for his lack of experience and background with tax policy.

Trump has overseen a sweeping purge of the staff at the IRS, as he and other Republicans had regularly criticized spending in legislation during the Biden administration that allowed for the hiring of thousands of additional workers to crackdown on tax cheats to collect more revenue for the government.

Senate Democrats had launched an inquiry last December into Long, shortly after he was first nominated for the position, over his promotion of a pandemic-era tax credit that has been riddled with fraudulent claims.

Long served in Congress from 2011 to 2023, and at one sponsored legislation to abolish the IRS. He previously worked as an auctioneer and real estate broker.

Friday’s ouster marks yet another abrupt leadership shake-up at the nation’s tax collection agency.

All the kings horses and all the kings men can’t make a 2.5% increase in SS PAYMENTS be the best thing since sliced bread beause the COLA in itself is a joke or ”fake news” and it doesn’t effect the “Cost of Living” so i’m wondering when the people writing about this cola thing which won’t really be the be all to end all will wake up and realize that it doesn’t help that much since gas is still hovering near the $3.00 a gallon mark, groceries haven’t come down and how about toilet tissue ? So stop touting something that is “supposed” to happen and report on a fixed date to tell us! Illegal Immigrants are being treated better than those of us on SS with free food, healthcare, and lavish hotel rooms that are being paid for with taxpayer dollars paid for. Maybe this isn’t as bad as I think it is but it sure seems that way

Deep-six existing tax law and disband the IRS!
Flat tax on everyone, at every level, for everything (including corporations).
    Problem solved!
