President Donald Trump on Friday offered a measured but pointed response to growing calls for former First Lady Jill Biden to testify about her role in the cover-up of President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.
The comments came during a press conference held in the Oval Office alongside Elon Musk, who is concluding his advisory role with the administration. The event follows weeks of intensifying scrutiny over revelations from the newly released book Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, as well as reports of widespread use of the autopen to sign executive orders in Biden’s name.
During the Q&A portion of the press conference, Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump directly whether Jill Biden should be compelled to testify before Congress.
“Well, I hate the concept of it,” Trump began, acknowledging the sensitivity of involving a spouse in such matters. “It’s the wife of a man who is going through a lot of problems, and everybody that dealt with him understood that.”
Still, Trump didn’t shy away from what he believes is necessary. “They have to do what is right,” he said. “There was a lot of dishonesty in the election—as you know—of 2020, that’s been now caught. People understand it was a rigged election.”
“When you go further out, when you see the autopen, I think the autopen is going to become one of the great scandals of all time,” he said. “Because you have somebody operating it, or a number of people operating it.”
The president suggested that many of the executive actions signed during Biden’s presidency did not reflect Biden’s actual views.
“I knew Joe Biden. Joe Biden wasn’t in favor of opening up borders and letting 21 million people in—from prisons and mental institutions and gang members. He wasn’t into that at all,” Trump said. “Who signed these orders, proclamations, and all of these different things that he signed, that were so bad for our country?”
Trump’s remarks followed similar comments from House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY), who floated the idea earlier this week of issuing subpoenas for both Joe and Jill Biden.
“Wherever the trail leads is where we’re going to bring them in,” Comer told Sean Hannity on Fox News. “I would love to ask Joe Biden a lot of questions, but right now, we’re starting with the staffers who are operating the autopen.”
Also mentioned was former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, who Comer suggested could be called to testify over alleged efforts to insulate Biden and facilitate governance in his name.
At Thursday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took a far more aggressive stance, declaring that Jill Biden “certainly” should speak publicly about what she knew regarding her husband’s condition.
“She’s still lying to the American people,” Leavitt said. “She still thinks the American public are so stupid that they’re going to believe her lies, and, frankly, it’s insulting and she needs to answer for it.”
Leavitt also referenced recent appearances by Jill Biden, including one on The View, in which the former First Lady claimed everything was “fine” with her husband.
“There’s documentation, video evidence of her clearly shielding her husband away from the cameras,” Leavitt added. “This was a clear cover-up. Jill Biden was certainly complicit.”
While Trump’s tone toward Jill Biden was more restrained than that of some of his allies, his underlying message was clear: the American people deserve answers. As congressional Republicans prepare for a deeper probe into who was truly calling the shots in the Biden White House, all eyes are now on the Bidens—and whether either will be called to testify under oath.
