Donald Trump’s running mate announced on Sunday that if Congress were to pass a federal abortion ban, Trump would veto the legislation. Ohio Senator J.D. Vance made the statement during an interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.”
Vance emphasized that Trump has explicitly conveyed his intention to veto such a ban, despite pressure from some Republican legislators, including South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who have advocated for a national abortion ban.
This position reflects Trump’s evolving stance on abortion policy over the years. In April, when asked on a tarmac in Atlanta whether he would sign a national abortion ban if it were to pass Congress, Trump responded with a firm “no.” However, he did not elaborate on what he considered to be a “ban” at the time. During his presidency in 2018, Trump pushed for the Senate to enact a 20-week abortion restriction, a measure that had already passed the House of Representatives. Additionally, he celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision last year to overturn Roe v. Wade, which effectively removed the constitutional right to abortion.
The Daily Wire has more on the wide-ranging interview. It also addressed the widespread perception that Kamala Harris failed in her role to determine the root causes of migration as the so-called “Border Czar.”
“Well, we have to start with the foundational issue here, which is we have 25 million illegal aliens in this country right now because Kamala Harris has refused to do her job,” Vance began.
Welker pushed back, saying, “I have, very quickly, DHS says it’s much lower, it’s closer to eight million. Where do you get the 25 million from?”
“Well, I think the 25 million are the people that should’ve been deported that maybe weren’t deported, plus you add another 12 to 15 million that have come in since Kamala Harris. Look, whatever the number is –” Vance tried again.

“Fair, but I think there are reasons to believe that DHS is underestimating. Whatever the actual number is, it’s way too high, right?” Vance retorted, reflecting the concerns of millions of Americans, particularly those in border states and areas disproportionately affected by the border crisis. “We’re talking about millions upon millions of illegal immigrants who have entered the country just since Kamala became border czar a few years ago. The first thing –”
“She was put in charge of addressing the root causes of migration,” Welker interjected.
“Well, the root cause of migration, I would argue, Kristen, is that Kamala Harris refuses to do her job as Border Czar,” Vance shot back.

This statement is factually incorrect. Roe was overturned because the Constitution does not authorize the US Government to manage the abortion issue. Roe was unconstitutional from day one. The abortion issue by not being defined by the Constitution as an area of Federal Authority is by its absence defined as a state level issue. All the SCOTUS did was return to us to constitutional rule in the area of abortion. If the abortion supporters want a national abortion law they need to get to work convincing a super majority of Americans that it should be the law of the land and pass the Constitutional Amendment to enable it.
Abortion rights should be where they correctly are now, up to each individual state.
“……. Roe v. Wade, which effectively removed the constitutional right to abortion.” If it be the case that there is a right in the constitution to an abortion, the right would not be able to be erased. The justices admitted that a mistake was made back in 1973.
I get so tired of this National this and National that in terms of Abortion. Congress can pass all it wants either Yea or Nay on Abortion and it would still be Unconstitutional. What part of returning this to the States do people now on both sides of this issue fail to understand? Enough already. The fight is where it belongs in the States. Fight it out there.
