White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre asserted that Biden still believes Trump is an “existential threat” to the country, despite his willingness to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power. Jean-Pierre’s remarks came amid questions regarding Biden’s past statements about Trump, particularly his heated rhetoric during the election campaign, and seemingly chummy photos of him, the First Lady and Trump during his post-election White House visit.
Throughout the election campaign, Biden repeatedly described Trump as an “existential threat” to American democracy, framing his presidency as a dangerous turning point for the nation. Democrats, including Biden, warned that Trump’s policies posed a fundamental challenge to democratic institutions. Biden even likened Trump’s rhetoric and actions to those of authoritarian figures, with some likening Trump to Adolf Hitler. Biden’s calls for unity and healing post-election stand in stark contrast to the divisiveness of both his and Harris’s respective campaigns.
However, as the election unfolded and the American public delivered its verdict, Biden softened his tone, acknowledging the election results and insisting on a peaceful transfer of power. This shift raised questions among critics, particularly given Biden’s past characterizations of Trump.
When asked about Biden’s previous assertions and his apparent comfort with the idea of Trump returning to office, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the president had always respected the will of the American people, pointing to Biden’s remarks in the Rose Garden two days after the election, where he acknowledged the disappointing election results but insisted that he would uphold the rule of law and ensure a smooth transition.
“There was an election when the American people spoke. The will of the American people was very clear,” Jean-Pierre said. “And so the president is now in a situation where we have to deal with a peaceful transfer of power. We have to respect the will of the American people, and that’s what you have been seeing from this president—trying to lead by example to make sure that that happens, and that’s what the American people deserve.”
Jean-Pierre pointed out that Biden’s thinking on Trump being an “existential threat” had not changed, but that the president’s priority now was to model leadership.
“His thoughts and what he said, his thinking on that has not changed,” Jean-Pierre asserted. “He believes that is what the American people deserve, and I’m just going to leave it there for now.”
Critics from both sides of the political spectrum have suggested that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris never truly believed Trump to be the existential threat they once claimed him to be.
Some Republicans argue that Biden’s campaign rhetoric was hyperbolic and designed to stoke fears for political gain, rather than based on a genuine threat. On the other hand, certain progressives argue that while it is crucial to honor the results of the election, Biden’s accommodating posture could dilute the urgency of addressing the “authoritarianism” that they believe Trump will champion.
Trump is absolutely a threat: to the Democrat Party. And that’s all that Democrats care about. They could care less about the country.
