Zohran Mamdani Slams Billionaires While Benefiting from Soros-Funded Political Machine

New York City mayoral candidate and self-described socialist Zohran Mamdani is calling for the abolition of billionaires—even as his campaign rides a wave of support built by one of the most powerful billionaires on the planet: George Soros.

Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist currently serving in the New York State Assembly, declared, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires,” while doubling down on his plan to hike property taxes in “richer and whiter neighborhoods” if elected mayor. The remarks are part of a broader left-wing platform that includes government-run grocery stores and soft-on-crime policies.

But financial records tell a different story about who’s helping pave Mamdani’s path to City Hall.

Soros-Funded Network Behind Mamdani’s Rise

According to public financial disclosures reviewed by the New York Post, Soros’ Open Society Foundations have indirectly funneled over $37 million to organizations that played a direct role in boosting Mamdani’s profile, ground game, and eventual Democratic primary victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

That includes:

  • $23.7 million to the Working Families Party, Mamdani’s chief political sponsor and the group responsible for securing his spot on the Democratic line.
  • Another $14 million across at least nine far-left activist nonprofits that endorsed Mamdani, including Make the Road Action, MoveOn, Community Voices Heard, and Jewish Voice for Peace Action.

While Soros himself has not directly donated to Mamdani, his influence is evident. Patrick Gaspard, the former president of Open Society Foundations and a longtime Obama aide, quietly advised Mamdani’s campaign and brokered key alliances, including a strategic dinner with NYC Comptroller Brad Lander to coordinate endorsements.

A Billionaire’s Candidate Who Opposes Billionaires?

Critics—both on the right and center-left—are calling out Mamdani’s apparent hypocrisy.

“While Zohran Mamdani attacks job creators and rails against wealth, the truth is he’s benefiting from millions in support from billionaires and the very nonprofit network he pretends to stand apart from,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “You can’t have it both ways.”

Adams, running for reelection as an independent, emphasized his own rise from poverty in Brownsville, Brooklyn, saying, “The idea that billionaires or successful people shouldn’t exist isn’t just extreme — it’s un-American.”

Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa was more direct: “Mamdani doesn’t want to get rid of billionaires. He only wants to destroy the ones who don’t bankroll his radical agenda. If you’re George Soros or part of the far-left donor class, you get a free pass and a seat at the table.”

Business leaders are also sounding the alarm. Billionaire grocer John Catsimatidis, who has publicly clashed with Mamdani over his pledge to launch city-run supermarkets, warned that such policies would lead to job losses and capital flight.

A Radical Platform Funded by Old Money

Mamdani’s campaign has embraced a sweeping Marxist-style platform that includes:

  • Creating city-owned grocery stores
  • Imposing wealth taxes
  • Granting protections to non-citizens convicted of crimes

Yet all of this is being powered by a financial machine built by Soros.

“George Soros is like a comic-book villain funding a movement designed to undermine individual freedom,” said Douglas Kellogg, director at Americans for Tax Reform. “If communism and socialism were actually popular, he wouldn’t have to spend this much money to manufacture support.”

The Bottom Line

For a candidate who rails against capitalism, Mamdani’s rise has been anything but grassroots. It’s been crafted by elite institutions, wealthy donors, and carefully coordinated activist networks—most of them propped up by Soros dollars.
