Authorities Reclassify Gene Hackman And Wife’s Deaths As ‘Suspicious’ Amid New Revelations

Authorities have reclassified the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as “suspicious,” according to a search warrant affidavit released Thursday morning. The couple, along with their dog, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Feb. 26, 2025. Initial reports indicated no signs of foul play; however, further investigation has prompted a reevaluation of the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The couple and their dog were discovered during a welfare check prompted by a neighbor. Hackman was found in a mudroom near the kitchen, possibly having fallen suddenly, while Arakawa was found in a bathroom near a space heater and an open prescription bottle with scattered pills. The bodies showed signs of decomposition, suggesting they had been deceased for some time. One of their three German Shepherds was also found dead, while the other two were alive and healthy.

Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, has speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might be the cause, a theory supported by some family members. However, initial checks by the fire department and New Mexico Gas Company found no obvious signs of a gas or carbon monoxide leak, though further investigation is ongoing. The sheriff’s office has noted that the final cause of death will likely not be confirmed until autopsies are completed, which could take 4-6 weeks. Until then, the precise reason for their deaths remains under investigation and unconfirmed.

Hackman, aged 95, was a celebrated actor known for his versatile roles in films such as The French Connection, Hoosiers and Unforgiven. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, was a classical pianist. The couple had been married since 1991 and resided in Santa Fe.

No further details have been released at this time.
