Jim Jones, a deputy commissioner at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has resigned following the dismissal of 89 agency employees by the Trump administration. In his resignation letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner, Jones expressed concern over the “indiscriminate firing” of staff, including experts in infant formula safety and food ingredient review. He stated that the administration’s “disdain for the very people necessary to implement your agenda” made it “fruitless” for him to continue in his role.
“It has been increasingly clear that with the Trump administration’s disdain for the very people necessary to implement your agenda… it would have been fruitless for me to continue in this role,” Jones stated in his letter to Brenner, which was obtained by The Wall Street Journal:
The resignation comes days after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was sworn in as Health and Human Services secretary, a role that includes oversight of the FDA. Kennedy has said that food companies and regulators are sickening Americans, and that he would end what he called corruption at the FDA and other agencies.
Jones became the FDA’s first deputy commissioner for human foods in 2023.
Since establishing the human-foods program in the wake of the 2022 baby formula shortage, the FDA had planned to bolster the regulation of food chemicals. The agency in January banned the use of Red No. 3, an artificial dye linked to cancer in animals, from food and ingested drugs.
The recent layoffs have raised concerns among food safety advocates. Scott Faber of the Environmental Working Group commented that Jones’s departure would “set back efforts to make food safer.”
In light of the resignations, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt argued that certain “bureaucrats” are resistant to the “mandate delivered by the American people.”
