Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is recovering following a health scare on his way to a Tuesday luncheon with Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill.
McConnell reportedly fell en route to the gathering, prompting medical personnel to attend to him in his office shortly thereafter, according to the New York Post. The incident is the latest in a series of health challenges for the Kentucky Republican, who has served as a pillar of Senate GOP leadership for decades:
McConnell, 82, is currently being treated by EMTs in his Senate office after the scrape, sources said, but his successor calmed nerves minutes later to announce the GOP leader was on the mend.
“He is fine. He is in his office,” incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told reporters after the accident, declining to elaborate further.
Few details were provided of McConnell’s condition, though photographers apparently saw him with the cut on his face and medical personnel were spotted entering his Senate office.
He is believed to have slipped in a room outside of the Senate chamber.
Over the past 18 months, the Kentucky Republican has experienced multiple public incidents, most visibly freezing during press events—twice in the summer of 2023. On both occasions, McConnell struggled to speak before being whisked away.

In the wake of those episodes, the Capitol physician cleared McConnell, ruling out seizure disorders or strokes after thorough testing. However, the episodes have fueled debate among his GOP colleagues, with some expressing private—and increasingly public—concerns about his capacity to serve in such a demanding position.
In March 2023, McConnell was hospitalized for five days for a rib fracture and a concussion following a fall at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C.
Although McConnell stepped down as Senate GOP leader last month, he has stated his intention to serve the remainder of his term, which concludes in January 2027.
