Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has reported receiving death threats after introducing a resolution in the House aimed at prohibiting biological men from using women’s facilities in the Capitol. The resolution, which Mace unveiled on Monday, was in part a response to the election of Sarah McBride as the first openly transgender U.S. representative in history.
In an interview with NewsNation’s Leland Vittert, Mace defended her position against criticism, including from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who opposed the resolution.
“It’s the height of gaslighting to have this guy, a man, Hakeem Jeffries, try to bully me into submission,” Mace said. “Look, I am a rape survivor, I’m a survivor of sexual violence and abuse, and I know how vulnerable women and girls are in private spaces. At the end of the day, the question is: do women have rights or not? This issue doesn’t stop on Capitol Hill—it’s happening across the country.”
Mace, who has described herself as socially moderate, expressed strong feelings about protecting women’s spaces. “At some point, we have to draw a line with this insanity, and this is a big, fat red line for me,” she added.
The congresswoman also detailed personal concerns about shared spaces, particularly in the Capitol. “If I’m in the women’s gym in D.C., changing clothes in the locker room, and a man shows up, and his genitalia is in the room, that’s not okay,” she said. “This is about protecting privacy and safety.”

The comment came after Mace introduced a bathroom bill after the first openly transgender person, Sarah McBride, was elected to Congress.

After some speculation, the controversy prompted a definitive response from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who announced on Wednesday that biological men would be barred from using women’s bathrooms and locker rooms in the Capitol and House Office Buildings.
