Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has announced he will no longer pursue the role of administrator of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), despite being selected by President-elect Donald Trump. Chronister shared his decision on X, calling the nomination “the honor of a lifetime” but citing his responsibilities to his local community as the reason for stepping back.

“To have been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration is the honor of a lifetime,” Chronister wrote. “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration.”

Focus on Hillsborough County

Chronister emphasized his commitment to ongoing initiatives in Hillsborough County, stating, “There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling.”

His withdrawal follows a wave of criticism from conservative figures over past decisions, particularly during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. While Chronister’s nomination was praised by some for his leadership and dedication to law enforcement, it also sparked backlash from prominent right-wing voices.

Controversy Over COVID-19 Policies

Critics have focused on Chronister’s decision to arrest Tampa Bay pastor Dr. Rodney Howard-Browne in March 2020 for holding in-person church services in violation of COVID-19 lockdown orders. Conservative commentators like Liz Wheeler and Mike Cernovich seized on the arrest as an example of what they deemed overreach.

Wheeler accused Chronister of implementing discriminatory policies during the pandemic, saying he withheld pay from unvaccinated deputies who became ill while giving taxpayer money to vaccinated officers. She described these actions as “despicable.”

Cernovich added to the criticism, pointing to a past comment where Chronister referred to himself as “the most Democratic of Republicans” and lamented, “The right’s gone way too far right for me.” He questioned what such views mean for moderate Republicans in the current political landscape.

Broader Cabinet Shake-Ups?

Chronister’s decision comes amid speculation about potential changes to Trump’s Cabinet picks. According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s current nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, faces increasingly long odds, following allegations of excessive alcohol use and sexual misconduct. Growing discomfort among GOP senators has led to speculation that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could emerge as an alternative candidate. Sources suggest Trump has not ruled out replacing Hegseth with DeSantis, though no formal changes have been announced.
