Some of you may remember the original Death Race 2000 movie from 1975. Others might remember 2008’s Death Race, which was something of a prequel. The important thing is that both movies feature upgunned and armored cars, trucks, and other vehicles in which drivers and teams of drivers fought with other drivers in equally well-armed vehicles. Bonus points were awarded for hitting innocent pedestrians (at least in the 1975 version).
Recently, one or more Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV) or possibly Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) crews recently channeled these films on the battlefield. As you can see in these videos, they put more than a little effort into catching up with and then running over pro-Russian soldiers with their four- or eight-wheel drive (4×4 or 8×8) 20-ton Strykers.
Whether this was due to a lack of onboard ammunition, weapon failure, or just a ghoulishly entertaining (though undeniably effective) method of engaging the enemy is unknown. Some reports indicate the vehicle filmed here was a part of Ukraine’s 80th Air Assault Brigade.
Given the cost of fuel vs. artillery shells, it was almost certainly a less expensive operation than more traditional attacks.
Nor do we know if the dismounted infantry were actual Russians, members of a Private Military Company (PMC), or DPRK soldiers (see North Korean soldiers in Ukraine). It’s also possible these were Ukrainian troops fleeing the battlefield
We likely won’t learn the actual story here in the U.S., at least not any time soon, but the videos almost immediately went viral. And have already started inspiring memes.
The United States has reportedly shipped as many as 400 Strykers of at least three variants to Ukraine as part of an aid package. They’ve been seen operating in a number of front-line areas, including the Zaporizha Oblast. Depending on the reporting source, at least two dozen of these have been destroyed and a possible half dozen more captured.

O.M.G. I hate that the Russians have attacked their brothers in Ukraine but this, this is brutality. All the more reasons to stop giving aid to Ukraine.
I know you’ll hate to hear this, but it”s the war Putin started and is continuing. He keeps feeding troops into a meat grinder. Just as the Brits did in WWI. People who start wars deserve no sympathy and no quarter.
Using armored vehicles to run over enemy troops is a tactic of armored warfare against infantry. Wars are only won with violence; they are terrible events. However, no one was dying in Ukraine until President Putin fomented rebellion in Donetsk and Luhansk, took Crimea by force, and launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russia had no reason to start a war in Ukraine other than to acquire more territory.
It’s the enemy, you do what you need to do t take them out. If you have no ammo, do it how you can. It is too bad that these kinds of articles are written by people who have nver been to war and have no clue as to what needs to be done.
