Notably, one Republican senator, former Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), opposed Gabbard’s nomination. Every other Republican in the chamber backed her appointment.
As The New York Times reports:
Ms. Gabbard faced pointed questions in her confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, including from some Republicans. But she advanced through the committee along party lines, with every Republican in support. Susan Collins of Maine, one of the Republicans who had wavered, ultimately decided to vote for Ms. Gabbard, saying she shared her vision for reducing the size of the intelligence agency.
Gabbard’s confirmation signals a shift in the intelligence leadership, as she takes on the role overseeing the nation’s intelligence agencies at a time of heightened global tensions and security challenges.
