The U.S. Men’s National Team received a major boost ahead of its Round of 16 showdown with Belgium after FIFA rescinded the controversial red card shown to star striker Folarin Balogun, making him eligible to play in Monday night’s knockout match.

The decision reverses what had become one of the most debated officiating calls of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and dramatically improves the Americans’ outlook as they continue their bid for a deep tournament run on home soil.

Balogun, who plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League, scored the opening goal in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina before being sent off in the second half following a controversial VAR review.

The incident occurred when Balogun inadvertently stepped on the ankle of a Bosnian defender during a challenge. Referee Rafael Claus of Brazil initially allowed play to continue without issuing even a yellow card before being instructed to review the play on the pitchside monitor.

After a lengthy VAR review that surprised broadcasters and fans alike, Claus returned to the field and produced a straight red card, leaving the United States to finish the match with 10 men.

The decision immediately sparked controversy, with commentators questioning whether the contact rose to the level of serious foul play. Many observers argued the incident appeared accidental and noted that it had not drawn an on-field booking before video review.

Despite being down a man for the final portion of the match, the Americans held firm defensively.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese and the U.S. back line kept Bosnia off the scoresheet, while midfielder Malik Tillman effectively sealed the victory with a spectacular free kick that extended the lead to 2-0.

Even as American fans celebrated advancing to the knockout stage, concern quickly shifted to Balogun’s availability for the next round.

Under FIFA rules, a player shown a straight red card is automatically suspended for the following match unless the disciplinary action is overturned or modified on appeal.

That uncertainty lingered until Sunday, when FIFA’s judicial body ruled in Balogun’s favor.

Rather than upholding the suspension, FIFA rescinded the red card and instead placed Balogun on a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of its disciplinary code.

According to the regulation, “the judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.”

The decision means Balogun will be available against Belgium but will face stricter consequences should he commit a similar offense during the probationary period.

“The suspension shall be revoked by the judicial body and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement,” the rule states.

The reversal represents an enormous boost for the U.S. attack.

Balogun has emerged as one of the Americans’ most dangerous offensive threats throughout the tournament, and his goal against Bosnia marked his third of the World Cup. His chemistry with captain Christian Pulisic has been a key component of head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.

Belgium advanced to the Round of 16 after mounting a dramatic comeback from a 2-0 deficit against Senegal before winning in extra time, setting up what is expected to be one of the marquee knockout matches of the tournament.

With Balogun now cleared to play, the United States enters Monday night’s contest at full strength offensively, giving American supporters renewed optimism that the host nation can advance to the quarterfinals and continue one of the program’s most successful World Cup campaigns in decades.
