Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the country’s top military commander Tuesday, replacing Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi after days of nationwide protests that exposed growing frustration with Ukraine’s wartime leadership.

Zelensky named Gen. Mykhailo Drapatyi as Ukraine’s new commander in chief, calling for fresh military leadership as the country continues fighting Russia’s full-scale invasion. The move marks the most significant shakeup of Ukraine’s military command since 2024.

Protests began over defense minister’s dismissal

The demonstrations that preceded Syrskyi’s removal did not begin over the general himself.

Instead, they erupted after Zelensky dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a popular reformer credited with accelerating Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities, modernizing military procurement, and pushing anti-corruption reforms. The decision triggered rare public protests in Kyiv and other cities, with thousands of mostly young Ukrainians accusing the government of undermining reforms that had helped improve Ukraine’s battlefield performance.

As the demonstrations grew, protesters expanded their demands beyond Fedorov’s reinstatement, chanting for Syrskyi to step down as well.

Many critics argued that the conflict between Fedorov’s technology-driven approach and Syrskyi’s more traditional, Soviet-era command philosophy had become unsustainable, leaving Zelensky facing pressure to address both political and military leadership.

Drapatyi brings battlefield credentials

Zelensky turned to Drapatyi, one of Ukraine’s best-known battlefield commanders, to lead the armed forces through the next phase of the war.

Drapatyi previously commanded Ukraine’s Joint Forces and earned praise for helping oversee the liberation of Kherson and directing operations to blunt Russian offensives in the Kharkiv region. Supporters view him as a younger commander more willing to embrace innovation and adapt to the rapidly evolving battlefield.

Zelensky praises Syrskyi’s service

Despite replacing him, Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for his leadership during some of the war’s most difficult periods.

The president said Ukraine remains united in its objective of defeating Russia while applying military and diplomatic pressure to secure what he described as a just peace. He also emphasized the importance of protecting Ukrainian soldiers and improving battlefield effectiveness.

Leadership shakeup underscores political strain

The change comes at a delicate moment for Ukraine as it faces continued Russian attacks while relying heavily on Western military support.

Although replacing Syrskyi answers one of the protesters’ central demands, many demonstrators continue calling for Fedorov’s return to the Defense Ministry, arguing his reforms remain essential to Ukraine’s long-term war effort. Fedorov has reportedly declined alternative government positions, saying he is interested only in returning to the defense portfolio.

The episode has become one of the most serious political challenges of Zelensky’s presidency since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, highlighting tensions over how Ukraine should organize and modernize its military as the war enters another critical phase.
