Six House Republicans broke with GOP leadership on Wednesday, joining Democrats to advance legislation that would provide billions of dollars in additional support to Ukraine despite ongoing opposition from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The House voted 218-204 in favor of a discharge petition that forces consideration of the Ukraine Support Act, a measure that had remained stalled for more than a year after Republican leaders declined to bring it to the floor.

The vote marks one of the most significant bipartisan challenges to Republican leadership on foreign.

A newly released state audit has revealed that Illinois taxpayers have paid $1.6 billion for healthcare programs designed for illegal immigrants since 2020—far surpassing initial spending projections. The audit, which was requested by GOP legislators, also uncovered significant mismanagement and overspending within the program, with some individuals receiving benefits who were not eligible.

The findings highlight concerns over Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s handling of the state’s healthcare programs for noncitizens, which have been a source of political controversy and fiscal strain. The audit points to an excess in spending—more than 200% over budget estimates—and calls attention to improper enrollment and a failure to seek federal reimbursement for eligible individuals. Critics argue that this is indicative of poor oversight and a lack of accountability within the Pritzker administration.

State Senate Republican Leader John Curran, speaking to Fox News Digital, blasted the program’s management. “Thousands of people were allowed to sign up for free healthcare for years on the state taxpayer dime that should not have been eligible under the parameters laid out for this program,” Curran said.

The audit, conducted by Illinois Auditor General Frank J. Mautino, revealed several key issues with the enrollment process. Among the most concerning findings was the discovery that over 6,000 individuals who were listed as “undocumented” in state healthcare programs had Social Security numbers. Some of these individuals may have been legal permanent residents who could have qualified for Medicaid, allowing the state to access federal funding.

The report also flagged errors in the senior health program, which included nearly 700 enrollees who were under 65, with many of these discrepancies traced back to incorrect birth dates that were later corrected. Additionally, the audit found that nearly 400 enrollees had been in the U.S. for more than five years and should have qualified for Medicaid under federal guidelines. As a result, Illinois missed out on federal matching funds, further compounding the financial strain on state taxpayers.

The audit recommended that the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services seek reimbursement for the lost federal funds, emphasizing that the state could have been better positioned financially had it properly managed the program.

The audit comes on the heels of Governor Pritzker’s announcement that his administration plans to cut funding for healthcare programs that provide Medicaid-like coverage to noncitizens, including both illegal immigrants and legal immigrants without green cards. The proposed reduction, expected to save $330 million, is part of Pritzker’s strategy to address Illinois’ $3 billion budget shortfall.

As of December 2023, there were 41,505 individuals enrolled in the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program, which Pritzker has proposed cutting starting July 1.

Under Pritzker’s leadership, Illinois has remained a sanctuary state, with both Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson vowing to resist Donald Trump’s deportation efforts.

The release of the audit and the ongoing debate over healthcare for illegal immigrants have highlighted the deepening rift between Illinois’ Democratic leadership and not only Republicans but constituents, particularly in the context of state fiscal health and immigration policy. While Governor Pritzker remains committed to progressive healthcare policies, critics like Curran argue that the state must reevaluate its priorities, especially given the financial challenges Illinois faces. Chicago, long considered a Democratic stronghold, has seen a growing number of residents protesting and resisting sanctuary policies at the state and local level.

So with typical liberal logic, instead of getting rid of the massive drain on their economy by co-operating with the federal government to get rid of the source of their deficit, they are going to seek reimbursement for some of the charges from the federal taxpayers so all Americans can share their stupidity. Seems counter productive when the feds are in the midst of a massive crackdown to eliminate the waste that has been built into the government over the last few decades and especially in the last 4 years when billions went out the door never to be heard from or accounted for. I personally hope that any request for funds from any source to pay for anything related to illegal invaders except for deportation are refused and left up to the states to finance by taxation off their residents. My theory is that if you want them, great! You can support them!
