Two-time Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman, aged 95, passed away from heart disease approximately one week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, authorities announced Friday. The couple was discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Feb. 26, 2025, during a welfare check prompted by concerns from a maintenance worker.

Autopsy results revealed that Hackman died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiac disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a contributing factor. Arakawa’s death was attributed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and often fatal respiratory disease transmitted through contact with infected rodent droppings. Investigators believe Arakawa died around Feb. 11, and Hackman passed approximately seven days later, likely unaware of his wife’s death due to his advanced Alzheimer’s condition.
Authorities have ruled out foul play, and initial tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative. The couple’s bodies were found in advanced stages of decomposition, with one of their three dogs also deceased.
Hackman, a two-time Academy Award-winning actor known for roles in films such as The French Connection and Unforgiven, had been retired from acting since 2004. Arakawa, a classical pianist, had been married to Hackman since 1991.
Hantavirus infections are rare but can be severe, leading to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the lungs and can be fatal. Health officials recommend minimizing exposure to rodent-infested areas and practicing proper sanitation to reduce the risk of infection.
