Robert Preston Morris, a Texas megachurch pastor and former spirtual adviser to President Donald Trump, has been indicted for multiple child sex crimes.
Morris, a spiritual adviser to Trump during his 2016 campaign was indicted on Wednesday for five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child, stemming from a series of alleged incidents in Oklahoma during the 1980s.
The Guardian reports:
A multi-county grand jury issued an indictment on 12 March, which alleges Morris was a traveling evangelist visiting in Hominy, Oklahoma, with the family of the alleged victim in December 1982. The indictment alleges Morris’s sexual misconduct began that Christmas and continued over four years. The alleged victim was 12 years old at the time and Morris was 21 years old.
Morris was a member of Donald Trump’s spiritual advisory committee and Evangelical Executive Advisory Board during his first presidential term and part of an effort to mobilize conservatives and evangelicals in support of Trump’s 2024 presidential bid. He also hosted an appearance by Trump at Gateway church in June 2020.
“So I want to thank Pastors Robert Morris and Steve Dulin. They’re great people,” Trump said at the appearance in 2020. Dulin, an elder at the church, resigned following an internal investigation of the abuse and how the church handled it. “Great people with a great reputation. I have to say that. Great reputation. And Gateway church – the team has been incredible in hosting us.”
In 2024, following Morris’s resignation, the Trump campaign said Morris had no role in the campaign.
His indictment follows accusations by Cindy Clemishire, who alleged Morris sexually assaulted her beginning when she was a preteen, finally leading to his resignation from Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas last June after admitting to “inappropriate sexual behavior.”
Clemishire, now 55, has publicly accused Morris of repeatedly abusing her when he was a traveling evangelist staying with her family.
She described the abuse as continuing for four years.
Following these allegations, Morris resigned as the senior pastor of Gateway Church. He admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” in his 20s but did not initially provide full details, leading to public outrage and further scrutiny.
The alleged crimes took place in Oklahoma, where Morris was not a resident or inhabitant, which allowed the case to proceed despite the passage of time (the statute of limitations does not apply in this case due to Morris’ non-residency in Oklahoma).
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond (R) emphasized zero tolerance for those who sexually prey on children, emphasizing the severity of the case due to the horrid nature of the allegations and Morris’ position as a supposed role model.
A statement from Drummond’s Office clarifies that Morris, like any person arrested, charged or indicted, is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including imprisonment, fines and registration as a sex offender.
