Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) recently made waves on social media after sharing an anecdote during a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight meeting that many critics have seized upon to accuse her of being a “DEI hire.” Crockett, a former public defender, described how she landed the job despite having no criminal defense experience, citing her race as the reason for being hired. The comments have ignited a firestorm of backlash, with social media users mocking and criticizing the congresswoman for an unapologetic admission of benefitting from discriminatory hiring practices.
During the meeting, Crockett reflected on her early career as a public defender, revealing the following exchange with her then-boss, Charlie:
“When I first became a public defender, I had no criminal defense experience, and I walked in, and I told my boss, Charlie, I said, ‘Listen, you should hire me.’ He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because I’m black.’”
Crockett continued, explaining how her boss was initially skeptical but eventually offered her the position after she assured him of her ability to build rapport with clients in a way that other colleagues might not:
“Charlie looked at me like I was crazy,” Crockett said. “Let me tell you something, when I walk in, I’m going to walk in with a level of rapport and understanding that maybe some of my other colleagues will not.”
After this conversation, Crockett claims she was hired and later worked tirelessly for her clients. While she insists that her success came through hard work, the initial claim that her race played a pivotal role in securing the position quickly became the focus of criticism online.
The admission was quickly shared across social media platforms, with many commentators framing Crockett’s remarks as a blatant acknowledgment of being a “DEI hire,” a term often used pejoratively by critics of diversity initiatives. Many social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage, calling Crockett’s statement a “confession” of racial favoritism in hiring practices.
Libs of TikTok, a well-known conservative account, reacted by calling the statement “incredible,” highlighting that Crockett had “publicly admitted that she only got her job as a public defender because she was black.” Others, including conservative activist Charlie Kirk, were quick to respond, claiming that Crockett was “bragging” about being hired due to DEI policies.
Conservative commentators like Benny Johnson and others expressed dismay that Crockett appeared to own her status as a DEI hire without any sense of shame or acknowledgment of potential drawbacks.
Legal scholars and media personalities also weighed in, arguing that DEI hiring undermines the principles of equal opportunity by focusing too heavily on race rather than qualifications and experience.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative reaction, some defended Crockett’s comments, suggesting that the focus on race and DEI practices misses the broader context of her statement. Supporters argue that her claim was not an admission of incompetence but a reflection of her confidence in her ability to connect with clients and the value she believed she brought to the table as a black public defender, as many of her clients were also black.
Whether one supports or opposes DEI practices, the debate surrounding Crockett’s statement is part of a larger conversation about how society navigates issues of race, merit, and fairness in hiring decisions.

Looks like Crockett is RIGHT!, WHO CARES IF SHE IS BLACK. All the rest of it is just SOAP OPERA MATERIAL.
She is stupid, and stupid enough to admit it !
Was there ever any DOUBT? Affirmative Action all the way and it shows 100%
“…many of her clients were also black.” Did she represent her non-black (i.e. white) clients as vigorously as her black clients? Anybody care to take a guess?
