The U.S. Space Force has relieved Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, following comments she made about Vice President JD Vance and the policies of the Trump administration.
Meyers was removed from command on Thursday by Colonel Kenneth Klock, Commander of Space Base Delta 1, citing a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead,” according to an official statement from Space Operations Command.
“Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of Pituffik Space Base was removed from command by Colonel Kenneth Klock, commander of Space Base Delta 1, on April 10, 2025 for loss of confidence in her ability to lead,” Space Operations Command announced in a media release.
“Commanders are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct, particularly regarding nonpartisanship in the performance of their duties,” the release added.
Colonel Shawn Lee has assumed command of Pituffik Space Base effective immediately.
Meyers’ removal occurred just hours after reports emerged that she had sent an internal email distancing the U.S. military installation from Vice President Vance and the policies of the Trump administration, particularly regarding its interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. The email reportedly emphasized that Pituffik Space Base remained “nonpartisan” and would not be associated with any political figure or agenda.
As Mediaite reports:
Mere hours before her removal, Military.com reported that Meyers had distanced herself from Vance in an email to personnel at the space base.
“[I] spent the weekend thinking about Friday’s visit [by Vance] — the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you,” wrote Meyers in the email. “I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”

She concluded, “I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly — together.”
Meyers sent out the email on March 31 – just days after Vance criticized Denmark and made clear the Trump administration’s interest in annexing the territory during a March 28 visit to the base.
“Our message to Denmark is very simple,” Vance declared during his visit. “You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security of this incredible, beautiful landmass.”
The leadership shakeup comes amid heightened sensitivity over military neutrality, as the Trump administration pursues a sweeping foreign and defense policy rooted in its America First agenda.

Just as all CONUS west had to decide whether to loose the bonds that tightly held them, Greenlanders too will have to decide. I wonder if the EU will permit the freedoms that they claim EU membership provides?
