Second Lady Usha Vance announced Tuesday that she and Vice President J.D. Vance are expecting their fourth child, a son due in late July, marking what appears to be a historic first for the office she holds.
The announcement was shared in a joint post on X by the vice president and his wife, who said both mother and baby are doing well.
“We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the post read. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
The couple also expressed gratitude to military medical professionals and White House staff who support their family while they serve in public office.
“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” the statement continued.
While births among the families of sitting presidents and vice presidents are uncommon, Usha Vance’s pregnancy is notable for its rarity. Historical records indicate that although two first ladies—Frances Folsom Cleveland in the 1890s and Jacqueline Kennedy in 1963—gave birth while their husbands were in office, there is no widely documented instance of a second lady giving birth during a vice-presidential term.
The Vances, who married in 2014, are already parents to three children: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. The expected baby will be their third son.
Usha Vance, a Yale Law School graduate, previously clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Since becoming second lady, she has taken on a visible role in administration activities and public engagements. In December 2025, she joined first lady Melania Trump and Red Cross organizers to assemble care packages and sign holiday cards for deployed U.S. service members.
Earlier in 2025, Usha Vance traveled with her husband and their children to India alongside senior Pentagon and State Department officials, a visit that highlighted her background as the daughter of Indian immigrants and a practicing Hindu. In March, she also visited Greenland as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to expand U.S. involvement in the Arctic region.
Her announcement comes amid a wave of high-profile family milestones within the Trump-Vance administration. Just weeks ago, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed she is expecting her second child in May 2026, becoming the first known press secretary in U.S. history to announce a pregnancy while serving in the role.
