Former MSNBC host Joy Reid creates controversy during a recent appearance on the I’ve Had It podcast, where she speculated about Vice President JD Vance’s marriage and political future. Reid questioned whether Vance might eventually seek a new spouse to better align with what she characterized as expectations within the MAGA movement, focusing on the fact that second lady Usha Vance is Indian American.
Reid suggested that Vance may not be widely embraced by MAGA supporters in a potential 2028 presidential bid because of his wife’s background. “They can’t have the successor to MAGA be the guy with the brown Hindu wife,” she said, adding, “They’re also Christian nationalists. That ain’t going to work. That’s why he’s throwing his wife under the bus. Poor Usha. Or she’s in on it.”
Her comments came in the context of a segment discussing a public interaction between Vance and Erika Kirk at a Turning Point event, in which Kirk hugged Vance and touched the back of his head. I’ve Had It co-host Jennifer Welch reacted to the moment, describing it as “the weirdest s— I’ve ever seen,” while Reid noted Kirk’s physical embrace of the vice president, saying she would be suspicious if a woman held her husband in such a manner.
Reid also criticized Kirk’s appearance during the event, remarking, “You not doing that right thing. [You’re] supposed to be a widow, you in leather pants? That’s not widow wear.”
The exchange continued with Reid raising the hypothetical idea that aligning with Kirk could serve Vance politically. She framed the possibility as a narrative that might resonate with certain supporters: “Wouldn’t it be the most perfect fairy tale, MAGA fairy tale, if he finally sees the light that he needs a white queen instead of this brown Hindu?” She added, “I mean, I’m not saying that’s happening, or maybe that Usha is not even in on it.”
Far-right commentator Nick Fuentes has previously attacked Vance on those grounds, blasting him for having an “Indian wife.” But Nick Fuentes has been a vocal critic of Trump for years, and did not support the Trump-Vance ticket in the 2024 presidential election.
Although criticism from figures like Fuentes exists, it hasn’t translated into universal MAGA outrage over the marriage. The general reaction to Vance from Trump voters has been largely supportive. The MAGA base has welcomed Vance — emphasizing his policy positions and performance on the campaign trail as well as his first year as vice president.
In contrast, much of the recent high-profile criticism — such as that from Joy Reid and other left-wing media personalities — has focused more on the optics of Vance’s marriage in relation to his political ambitions.
Reid’s appearance comes months after MSNBC canceled her show in February as the network rebranded to MS NOW. She now hosts The Joy Reid Show on YouTube.
