Democratic Texas State Rep. Gene Wu is facing renewed scrutiny after racially charged remarks he made during a December 2024 podcast resurfaced on social media over the weekend.
Wu’s comments came from a Dec. 31, 2024 episode of the podcast “Define American with Jose Antonio Vargas” and were reposted Saturday night on X by the account End Wokeness. The clip quickly went viral, receiving more than 12.5 million views. The resurfaced remarks prompted criticism from several high-profile figures, including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
During the interview, which took place nearly two months after the 2024 presidential election, Wu discussed political divisions among racial and ethnic groups in the United States and described white people as a shared source of oppression.
Wu said that Latino, African American, Asian and other communities have been deliberately divided from one another and argued that they fail to recognize what he described as a “common oppressor.” He stated that if those groups became unified, they would have the ability to “take over this country” and reshape it to be more equitable. Wu currently serves as chairman of the Democratic Caucus in the Texas House of Representatives.
The comments drew renewed attention as President Donald Trump’s performance among minority voters improved in the 2024 election compared to prior cycles. According to CNN exit polls, Trump carried 46% of the Hispanic vote, 40% of the Asian vote and 13% of the black vote in 2024. In 2020, Trump received 32% of Hispanic voters, 34% of Asian voters and 12% of black voters. In 2016, those figures were 28% of Hispanic voters, 27% of Asian voters and 8% of black voters.
Republicans seized on Wu’s remarks as evidence of what they describe as growing racial radicalism within the Democratic Party.
“These disgusting comments are wokeness at its worst, and the silence is deafening from Democrats,” Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft told the Daily Caller News Foundation. He pointed to other Texas Democrats as examples of what he described as the spread of ideological extremism within the party.
Kraft cited recent comments and campaign messaging from Democratic figures James Talarico and Jasmine Crockett, arguing that their rhetoric reflected a broader trend among Texas Democrats ahead of upcoming elections.
