The Minnesota Republican gubernatorial race was abruptly reshaped Saturday night after candidate Jeff Johnson suspended his 2026 campaign following the death of his daughter.
Johnson announced he would suspend his campaign indefinitely after his 22-year-old daughter, Hallie Marie Tobler, was found fatally stabbed in her St. Cloud apartment. Her husband, Dylan Tobler, 23, was also found critically injured.
Investigators believe his injuries were self-inflicted and that he was responsible for Hallie Tobler’s death. Authorities said the two were found inside a locked apartment, and homicide charges are expected.
The Daily Mail continues:
As of Sunday night, Dylan was reported in stable condition at St. Cloud Hospital, where he was in police custody, MPR News reports.
Charges against him are now pending, as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assists local authorities in its investigation.
In the meantime, the Republican Party of Minnesota announced that Johnson has suspended his campaign.
In a statement on the family tragedy, an update said party members are ‘heartbroken’ by the loss.
The state party said there were “no words” to adequately convey their sorrow for Johnson and his family, describing the loss of a child as “unimaginable.”
The statement urged Minnesotans to keep the Johnson family in their thoughts and prayers during what they described as an “incredibly painful time.”
Johnson ran for governor on a law-and-order platform focused on public safety, cost-of-living concerns, tax restraint, and opposition to progressive crime and energy policies. Prior to suspending his campaign, he was viewed as a viable mid-tier contender with grassroots conservative support, and his departure is likely to shift momentum toward remaining candidates with broader statewide profiles.
Leaders from both parties offered condolences, and campaigns across the state temporarily paused activity in a show of respect.
