The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned law enforcement agencies in California about a potential threat from Iran involving drone attacks launched from offshore vessels, according to a report by ABC News.
In an alert circulated to police departments, the FBI said it had obtained information suggesting that Iranian actors had considered carrying out a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles against targets on the West Coast of the United States.
“We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran,” the alert stated. “We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.”
The warning came at the end of last month, around the same time the Trump Administration launched military operations targeting Iran. Federal authorities said the intelligence did not include details about specific targets or timelines but was shared so local and state agencies could prepare for potential threats.
Security analysts say the concern reflects broader fears that adversaries could attempt to retaliate against the United States through unconventional means, including drones launched from international waters.
John Cohen, a former intelligence chief at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security who spoke to ABC News about the warning, said the possibility of such attacks highlights growing security risks.
“We know Iran has an extensive presence in Mexico and South America, they have relationships, they have the drones and now they have the incentive to conduct attacks,” Cohen said. “The FBI is smart for putting this warning out so that state and locals can be better able to prepare and respond to these types of threats. Information like this is critically important for law enforcement.”
Officials have also raised concerns about the potential use of drones by criminal organizations. American authorities have warned that Mexican drug cartels have increasingly adopted drone technology, raising the possibility that such tactics could be used in cross-border operations or other attacks.
While officials emphasized that the intelligence does not indicate an imminent strike, the alert underscores growing security concerns as tensions between the United States and Iran escalate. Federal and local agencies are continuing to monitor potential threats and coordinate preparedness efforts along the West Coast.
