United States Capitol Police arrested 17 members of Congress in front of the Supreme Court earlier today during a protest for abortion rights.
The arrestees include prominent progressive lawmakers, from Massachusetts Democrat and Assistant House Speaker Katherine Clark (the fourth highest ranking House Democrat) to Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
Following standard procedures, Capitol Police officers gave the protesters blocking traffic on First Street NE, near the Supreme Court and Capitol Building, multiple warnings to cease and desist.
As Fox News reported:
“It is against the law to block traffic, so officers are going to give our standard three warnings before they start making arrests,” Capitol Police tweeted.
Instead, the representatives, who wore specially-made bandanas emblazoned with the words “Won’t Back Down” continued to chant “The people, united, will never be divided.”
Video from the scene showed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., being led away by police with her arms crossed behind her back, though no handcuffs were visible.

- Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.)
- Alma Adams (D-N.C.)
Abortion rights protests have become commonplace in front of and adjacent to the Supreme Court since the majority opinion draft from the Dobbs case — ultimately leading to the reversal of Roe v. Wade — became public knowledge. According to Axios, representatives continued speaking out as they were being taken away. After her arrest, Rep. Maloney, who leads the House Oversight Committee, defiantly said “There is no democracy if women do not have control over their own bodies and decisions about their own health, including reproductive care.”
When asked by reporters if they would be planning any future protests, the event organizer — Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) — only said “stay tuned.”
Those arrested can expect to receive a fine.

Mahoney needs to understand that when all have the right to their own health care including reproductive care. So either they quit laying down with a man unprotected or they have a separate body form within them called a baby, adopt it out or raise it. Those infringements officially began in the year 1828. And, during the 1830s, they took the homes and lands from the Cherokees forcing them into the unknown West.
In 1865, it took a war to officially declare slavery unconstitutional.
