WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signaled growing frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, declining to give an unequivocal endorsement ahead of Israel’s national election and openly questioning whether the veteran leader still wants to remain in politics.

The unusual posture has fueled speculation about growing friction between the two leaders at a pivotal moment for Israeli politics, with Netanyahu facing one of the most challenging reelection campaigns of his career amid fallout from ongoing regional conflicts and mounting domestic dissatisfaction.

During a recent interview, Trump openly mused about Netanyahu’s future, saying it remained unclear whether the Israeli prime minister wished to continue his political career after years in office.

“He’s had an amazing career,” Trump said. “Does he want to continue?”

The remarks immediately triggered speculation in Israel, where elections are expected this fall and Netanyahu’s political future has become a central issue. Netanyahu’s Likud Party quickly pushed back, insisting the prime minister will run for reelection and intends to win another term.

No Full-Throated Endorsement

Trump’s comments stand out because of his long history of publicly supporting Netanyahu.

Throughout much of Netanyahu’s political career, Trump has been viewed as one of his strongest international allies. Netanyahu has frequently highlighted his relationship with Trump as evidence of his ability to safeguard Israel’s interests on the world stage.

Yet despite continuing to praise Netanyahu’s accomplishments, Trump has notably stopped short of issuing the kind of forceful endorsement that many observers expected ahead of a closely watched election campaign.

Instead, the president has increasingly emphasized policy disagreements and frustrations regarding Israel’s actions in Lebanon and its response to the administration’s diplomatic efforts with Iran.

Iran Deal Creates New Tensions

The biggest source of friction has been Trump’s agreement with Iran.

The administration recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Tehran that established a framework for nuclear negotiations, reopened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and sought to reduce regional hostilities. The deal has been strongly criticized by several members of Netanyahu’s government, who argue it grants Iran excessive concessions while failing to adequately constrain its regional influence.

Vice President JD Vance publicly rebuked Israeli officials this week, warning members of Netanyahu’s cabinet not to attack “the only powerful ally” Israel has left. Vance also suggested that some Israeli officials were undermining the administration’s diplomatic objectives.

While Netanyahu himself has largely avoided direct public confrontation with Trump, reports indicate he has privately expressed frustration with the agreement and its implications for Israeli security.

Lebanon Dispute Adds Pressure

Another major point of contention involves Lebanon.

Trump recently criticized Israel’s handling of its conflict with Hezbollah, saying Netanyahu needed to be “more responsible with respect to Lebanon” and warning that continued fighting could jeopardize broader regional diplomatic efforts.

The administration’s emerging framework with Iran includes expectations that hostilities involving Israel and Hezbollah will eventually cease as part of a broader settlement. Netanyahu, however, has insisted Israeli forces will continue operating in Lebanon as long as security threats remain.

The disagreement has become one of the clearest examples of growing strategic divergence between Washington and Jerusalem.

Election Looms

The timing of Trump’s comments is particularly significant because Netanyahu is entering an election season that many analysts view as his most difficult in years.

Recent polling has suggested a majority of Israelis do not want Netanyahu to seek another term, though he continues to maintain strong support among many conservative and right-wing voters. Surveys have also shown persistent dissatisfaction related to security failures preceding the October 2023 Hamas attacks and the prolonged regional conflicts that followed.

Despite those challenges, Netanyahu remains firmly in control of Likud and is widely expected to lead the party into the upcoming election.

Trump Holds Significant Influence

For Netanyahu, Trump’s stance matters politically.

American leadership remains highly influential in Israeli public opinion, and Netanyahu has historically benefited from showcasing close ties to U.S. presidents. Political analysts have long viewed his relationship with Trump as one of his strongest assets among voters concerned about national security and foreign policy.

That is why Trump’s decision to leave his endorsement ambiguous — while simultaneously questioning Netanyahu’s future and publicly criticizing aspects of his leadership — has attracted considerable attention in both Washington and Jerusalem.

For now, Trump has not endorsed an alternative candidate, nor has he explicitly broken with Netanyahu. But his recent comments suggest a relationship that is becoming more transactional and more complicated than the one that once defined the U.S.-Israel political alliance.

With Israel’s election approaching and disagreements over Iran and Lebanon continuing to intensify, the question facing both leaders is whether their partnership can survive growing policy differences — or whether Trump’s increasingly pointed warnings signal a fundamental shift in one of the most important political relationships in the Middle East.
