REDDING, Calif. — Authorities are investigating the deaths of Judith “Judy” Wyler Sheldon, the daughter of legendary Oscar-winning filmmaker William Wyler, and her husband, prominent arts patron Wylie Sheldon, after the couple was found dead inside a running vehicle parked along Interstate 5 in Northern California.
The California Highway Patrol said an officer discovered the couple unresponsive inside a 2022 Jeep Compass on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near Fawndale Road outside Redding at approximately 5:46 p.m. on June 15. The vehicle was still running when authorities arrived. Judy Sheldon, 84, was found in the driver’s seat, while Wylie Sheldon, 86, was seated in the passenger seat. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures but both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not yet released an official cause of death, and autopsies are pending. The California Highway Patrol’s Northern Division Investigative Services Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Authorities have not announced any evidence of foul play.
Extreme Heat Raises Questions
The deaths occurred during a period of extreme temperatures across Northern California.
Weather conditions in the region reportedly reached approximately 109 degrees Fahrenheit on the day the couple was discovered. While authorities have not linked the deaths to the heat, investigators are examining all potential contributing factors.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, law enforcement officials have preliminarily described the incident as appearing to be “medically related,” though no definitive determination has been made. The exact circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths remain under investigation.
The Sheldons were reportedly traveling to Oregon to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival when the tragedy occurred.
Daughter of Hollywood Royalty
Judy Sheldon was the daughter of acclaimed director William Wyler, one of the most celebrated filmmakers in Hollywood history.
During a career spanning decades, William Wyler directed classics including “Ben-Hur,” “Roman Holiday,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “The Best Years of Our Lives.” He won three Academy Awards for Best Director and remains one of the most honored directors in film history.
While her father became a Hollywood legend, Judy forged her own identity within the arts world.
After a brief acting career in the 1950s, she became a major advocate for silent-film preservation and played a leading role in supporting film history organizations and cultural institutions throughout Northern California. She served as a board leader and longtime supporter of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, helping preserve and promote early cinema for future generations.
Shock Across the Arts Community
News of the couple’s deaths sent shockwaves through San Francisco’s film and arts communities, where the Sheldons were widely known for their philanthropy and support of cultural organizations.
Anita Monga, artistic director of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, said the organization was devastated by the loss.
“We are reeling from this news,” Monga said, describing the couple as longtime supporters whose generosity and enthusiasm helped sustain the festival for years.
Friends and colleagues remembered the Sheldons as devoted patrons of the arts whose home frequently served as a gathering place for filmmakers, archivists, musicians, and cultural leaders.
Investigation Continues
For now, many questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not released toxicology findings, medical conclusions, or details regarding what may have occurred inside the vehicle before the couple was discovered. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the Jeep parked along Interstate 5 that afternoon to contact law enforcement.
Until the investigation is complete, the deaths of Judy and Wylie Sheldon remain a mystery — one that has left both Hollywood historians and the broader arts community mourning the sudden loss of two of its most dedicated supporters.
