DEAL WITH IT, DC – Pentagon denies DC request for National Guard migrant help. The Pentagon rejected a request from the District of Columbia seeking National Guard assistance in what the mayor has called a “growing humanitarian crisis” prompted by thousands of migrants being bused to the city from two southern states.

IS DISORDERLY CONDUCT, ‘RIOTING’? – Marine who rioted in the Capitol on Jan. 6 gets probation. A former Marine charged with disorderly conduct and unlawful entry of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced Thursday to two years’ probation, 60 hours of community service and $500 in restitution after both the prosecution and defense used his prior military service to further their arguments in court.

CHINA THREAT

China extends threatening military exercises around Taiwan. China said Monday it was extending threatening military exercises surrounding Taiwan that have disrupted shipping and air traffic and substantially raised concerns about the potential for conflict in a region crucial to global trade.

Pentagon chiefs’ calls to China go unanswered amid Taiwan crisis. Top Chinese military officials have not returned multiple calls from their American counterparts this week as a crisis erupted in the Pacific over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, according to three people with knowledge of the attempts.

TOUGH BIDEN – Navy won’t back away from Taiwan in wake of Chinese belligerence, White House says. The U.S. 7th Fleet will send more aircraft and warships past Taiwan in the coming weeks, a response to China’s military exercises that have surrounded the island starting Thursday, according to the White House.

WEAK BIDEN – White House resists Congress’ bipartisan bid to overhaul US-Taiwan relations. Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taipei isn’t the only moment of congressional hawkishness the Biden administration would prefer to cage as it seeks to avoid provocation of China.

US to take part in military exercise near India’s disputed border with China. The military drills will be held in mid-October at an altitude of 10,000 feet in Auli in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and will focus on high-altitude warfare training, according to a senior Indian Army officer with knowledge of the matter.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

US readies new $1 billion Ukraine weapons package. The Biden administration’s next security assistance package for Ukraine is expected to be $1 billion, one of the largest so far, and include munitions for long-range weapons and armored medical transport vehicles, three sources briefed on the matter told Reuters on Friday.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 166. Ukrainian forces again shelled the Antonivskyi bridge in the Russian-controlled city of Kherson, damaging construction equipment and delaying its reopening, the Interfax news agency reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said if Moscow proceeded with referendums in occupied areas of his country on joining Russia, there could be no talks with Ukraine or its international allies.

Russia begins new assault on 2 cities in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Russian forces began an assault Saturday on two key cities in the eastern Donetsk region and kept up rocket and shelling attacks on other Ukrainian cities, including one close to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Ukraine’s military and local officials said.

PLAYING WITH FIRE – Ukraine and Russia trade blame after rockets hit near nuclear plant. The strike on Saturday landed near spent-fuel storage at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, which Russian forces have held since March. Follow updates.

IRAN THREAT

Iran, US close in on nuclear deal text but hurdles remain. Tehran is saying it will only sign a final deal after the U.N. drops a probe into its nuclear program.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

Here’s what we know about F-35 ejection seat woes so far. U.S. military officials say their F-35 Joint Strike Fighters are returning to flight after a scare from potentially defective ejection seats across the fleet, but won’t answer whether they’ve found the problem on any planes.

DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL? Number of monkeypox cases in the military climbs tenfold in less than 4 weeks. The number of cases of monkeypox has climbed in the U.S. military to 40, 10 times the number it was less than four weeks ago.
