Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is letting Arizona voters down.
Hobbs, who is also running to be the state’s next governor, admitted to mistakenly sending over 6,000 incorrect ballots on Tuesday.
According to Fox News, when individuals register to vote in Arizona or update their registration, an election system queries driver’s license records to verify whether the person has proven their citizenship. Those who do not have citizenship documentation on file are not eligible to vote in state elections and are registered as “federal only” voters.
Sophia Solis, a spokeswoman for Hobbs, said the driver’s license query failed to properly verify the citizenship for some people, leading them to be improperly registered as federal only voters. She did not provide a breakdown of their party affiliation or describe the characteristics that led to problems.
Federal only voters have been a subject of political wrangling since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that Arizona cannot require documentary proof of citizenship for people to vote in national elections. The state responded by creating two classes of voters — those who can vote in all races and those who can vote only in federal elections.
Hobbs says the issue will be resolved quickly.
The Arizona gubernatorial race is expected to be one of the most high-watched races in the country. Hobbs, who has largely staked her campaign defending the 2020 election and attacking former President Trump, has seen her lead shrink in recent weeks.
Former news anchor Kari Lake, a political newcomer, has defied expectations and surged ahead in polls. The most recent Daily Wire/ Trafalgar Group poll reported Lake with a three-point lead over Hobbs, falling just within the poll’s margin of error.
The poll also showed Republicans have the potential to flip a Senate seat with Republican candidate Blake Masters running close behind incumbent Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly (47.4%).
