Backlash is mounting against an MSNBC guest who speculated that Wednesday’s senseless murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk may have stemmed from celebratory gunfire by a supporter.
The comment came during a segment hosted by anchor Katy Tur, after Tur cautioned that it was too early to speculate on anything.
“We don’t know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration,” the guest responded, adding: “We have no idea — we don’t know any of the full details of this.”
Initial reports from Utah Valley University and multiple media outlets indicated that a suspect had been apprehended. Authorities later corrected the record, clarifying that the gunman remains at large.
Kirk ultimately passed away as a result of extensive blood loss. He was 31.
The shooting triggered a tidal wave of reaction across social media. Politicians, public figures, and advocacy groups condemned the attack and called for calm.
However, not all responses were somber. Some progressive accounts appeared to celebrate the violence, drawing withering criticism.
As soon as Charlie’s death was confirmed, heartfelt tributes and messages of support for his family flooded social media.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Erika, and two young kids.
