House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have agreed to set up a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The House will vote on the proposal sometime this week.
The task force is expected to function similarly to a select committee, with a clear mandate to uncover the security failures that allowed the attempt on Trump’s life.
Per CNN:
The task force, which Johnson told Fox News last week would be forthcoming, will have subpoena power, the statement said. Its goals will be to understand the security failures that led to the shooting, to seek accountability and to prevent such an attempt from happening again.
In a joint statement, Johnson and Jeffries addressed the gravity of the situation: “The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter.”
Johnson and Jeffries went on to emphasize the task force’s authority and urgency: “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”
If approved, the task force will report findings and proposals by December 13.
