House Votes On Spending Bill As Shutdown Looms

-

A coalition of Republican hardliners aligned with to vote down a stopgap funding bill on Friday, significantly increasing the chances of a shutdown.

Twenty-one Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the legislation, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) among others.

The final vote was 198-232. The measure advanced in a party-line vote earlier on Friday.

The bill did not stand a chance in the Senate, where Democrats were sure to line up against it. And the White House Friday morning issued a veto threat for the bill.

The bill's failure increases the odds of a , which will go into effect Saturday night unless passes a short-term funding bill by then.

Fox News has more:

A short-term funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), is almost certainly needed to give lawmakers more time to cobble together 12 individual spending bills for fiscal year 2024.

But Republican leaders have had a hard time so far corralling their conference into some kind of agreement. A faction of conservatives have for weeks said they are opposed to any CR, arguing it would be an extension of the previous Democratically-controlled Congress.

The House GOP's CR proposal included an amendment to slash spending for its month-long duration to fiscal 2022 levels, about $130 billion less than the current year's. It also featured elements from ' border security bill, and McCarthy said a new provision would mandate the creation of a bipartisan committee to study the federal debt.

The move is also a significant blow to McCarthy whose leadership has faced public threats throughout the spending battle.

  1. That small group of Republicans is desparately trying to stand out in the crowd, unfortunately at the expense of the American people. Remember their names at election time, and boot them out of office.

  2. I’m all for shutting this spending spree down with a small continuation of crucial programs like soc. sec., etc. This has gone on Way too long and needs to stop – especially any $ to Ukraine. There’s no reason to play nice w/ Democrats that spit in our faces – make them face what they’ve done to America and stop it !

  3. I’ve got my first check for a total of thirteen thousand US dollars. I am so energized, this is whenever I first really acquired something. I will work much harder now and I can hardly hang tight for the following week’s installment. Go to the Home tab for more detail. I highly recommend everyone to apply.. www.Payathome7.com
