In a contentious appearance on CNN’s “The Arena” Tuesday night, Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas dismissed comparisons between left-wing and right-wing political violence. The congresswoman argued that individuals on the left pose less of a violent threat due to their lack of familiarity with firearms — a remark that quickly drew backlash across the political spectrum.
“False Comparison”
Host Kasie Hunt pressed Crockett on whether political violence from the right poses a greater threat than violence from the left, referencing recent incidents and public reactions to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Rather than addressing the question directly, Crockett rejected the premise altogether.
“I think it’s a false comparison in the first place,” Crockett said. “And I think we should have a leader that is responsible enough to denounce political violence, period. It’s not about where it comes from. It’s about the fact that it is happening.”
Crockett refused to actually address the violence in her party and instead deflected to gun culture on the political right, suggesting that left-leaning individuals are less likely to engage in armed violence.
“Please tell me who is fostering this gun culture, right? I mean, the reality is that the average person on the left probably couldn’t make a shot from 200 yards because they haven’t been playing with assault rifles since they were a little kid. Like that is just the reality of how people on the left typically work,” Crockett told Hunt.
Public Opinion and Polling
Crockett’s comments came just days after a YouGov poll revealed that 25% of self-identified “very liberal” Americans believe political violence is “sometimes justified.” The data suggests growing tolerance on her side of the aisle — a trend that has sparked concern among political analysts and lawmakers alike.
Despite these findings, Crockett maintained that the real focus should be on mitigation strategies to prevent violence, including potential legislation like red flag laws.
“Maybe red flag laws would be helpful,” she said. “We are elected to at a very minimum try to do mitigation and try to make sure that everyone… can express their views without this idea that they may be subjected to violence.”
Reaction to Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
While some on the left expressed sympathy following the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, others mocked or even praised the incident online — behavior that has led to professional consequences, including terminations.
Veteran political analyst Brit Hume weighed in, warning that the left’s tone could backfire politically. While Crockett downplayed left-wing violence, Hume argued that the harsh and celebratory reactions to Kirk’s death reveal a deeper problem within progressive circles.
“The left’s increasingly hostile tone is a growing liability,” Hume said, noting that public reactions could erode trust and undermine moral high ground.
Grabien News founder Tom Elliot shared a viral video compilation showing progressive commentators and social media users lauding the assassination. ESPN host Stephen A. Smith strongly condemned those reactions on his SiriusXM show, calling them “cruel” and “inhuman.”
A Growing Political Divide
Crockett’s remarks, while condemning violence broadly, have been criticized for appearing to excuse or rationalize one side over the other.
“It is never OK,” Crockett repeated. “If it happens on the left, it is never OK if it happens on the right.”
Still, her comments about gun culture and liberal inexperience with firearms drew ire from conservative voices who argued that violence should not be measured by access to weapons but by intent and ideology.
The Road Ahead
As political tensions continue to boil, especially in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms, the national conversation around violence, speech, and responsibility is likely to intensify.
Crockett’s appearance may have been aimed at unity and mitigation, but critics argue that minimizing ideological threats — regardless of direction — undermines efforts to build consensus and prevent further tragedy.
