United States Senator Kyrsten Sinema is leaving the Democratic Party.
The Arizona moderate said in an interview that she has “never fit” in the caucus and will change her party affiliation to independent.
The first-term senator hasn't said if she'll run for reelection. However, she did make clear that she won't caucus with the Republicans.
Even if she had, Democrats would still retain control of the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris as a tiebreaker.

Provided that Sinema sticks to that vow, Democrats will still have a workable Senate majority in the next Congress, though it will not exactly be the neat and tidy 51 seats they assumed. They're expected to also have the votes to control Senate committees. And Sinema's move means Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) — a pivotal swing vote in the 50-50 chamber the past two years — will hold onto some but not all of his outsized influence in the Democratic caucus.

“I don't anticipate that anything will change about the Senate structure,” Sinema said, adding that some of the exact mechanics of how her switch affects the chamber is “a question for Chuck Schumer … I intend to show up to work, do the same work that I always do. I just intend to show up to work as an independent.”
She said her closely held decision to leave the Democratic Party reflects that she's “never really fit into a box of any political party” — a description she said also applies to her fiercely independent state and millions of unaffiliated voters across the country.
Sinema has a well-established iconoclastic reputation. She competes in Ironman triathlons, moonlighted at a Napa Valley winery and often hangs out on the GOP side of the aisle during floor votes.

Agree that party politics is broken because it’s focus is on power, control and wealth for career politicians. We need term limits for all elected officials, campaign finance that limits political donations from individuals from within the scope of the district of the elected office being sought. We need a return to real debates focused on issues. No one should be able to make politics a career they can use to enrich themselves or retire from. It’s needs to be public service not self service. Return domestic politics to local grass roots issues.
A declared “Independent” should be just that. None of the Independents should be counted in either party when it comes to which one holds the Majority status. That might actually give the American people a more honest representation in Congress and might help to get more actual work done there. This entire “caucus” nonsense is dishonest. If Bernie Sanders is a Democratic-Socialist, his vote shouldn’t be counted with the Democrats. Let him stand alone and see how much influence he wields then. If these Congressmen are such great leaders, make them show their true colors and a little honesty. If they aren’t honest enough and confident enough in their politics to do that, they don’t deserve to hold office.
Don’t know where Sinema stands, but from here on out, any politician (no matter their party affiliation) that supports a Convention Of States, gets my vote.
