A video released Thursday shows Sen. Mitch McConnell, 83, tripping and falling in a Capitol hallway. Aides and security quickly helped him up, and he appeared unharmed though visibly unsteady.
The incident adds to a series of health episodes for McConnell, including two falls in February 2025, a tumble during a December 2024 Capitol Hill luncheon, and multiple mid-sentence freezes in 2023 in Washington, D.C., and Covington, Kentucky. McConnell announced in February 2024 that he would retire at the end of his current term, ahead of the 2026 Kentucky Senate race.
The stumble occurred Thursday afternoon as Sunrise Movement activists pressed McConnell on his support for ICE enforcement actions. He resumed Senate duties afterward with no reported injuries.
Public reaction has underscored calls for term limits and generational change in Congress, intensifying debate about age and fitness for office among senior lawmakers.
