Pelosi Bows Out: Longtime Speaker Ends Congressional Career

Opening a new chapter for Democrats…

After nearly four decades in Congress and two historic stints as speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she will not seek reelection in 2026. The move marks the sunset of one of the most influential political careers in recent American history.

Pelosi, 85, shared the news in a video message to her constituents in California’s 11th District, which includes much of San Francisco.

“I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” she said. “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your representative.”

She closed with a familiar refrain, a call to civic action: “San Francisco, know your power. We have made history.”

Pelosi entered the House in 1987 and over time built a reputation as a tireless tactician, a formidable fundraiser, and the most powerful female lawmaker in U.S. history. She became the first woman to hold the Speaker’s gavel in 2007, serving until 2011, then returning to lead again from 2019 to 2023.

During her time at the top, Pelosi drove major Democratic policy wins:

  • The Affordable Care Act in 2010.
  • Financial reforms in response to the Great Recession.
  • Pandemic-era relief bills including the CARES Act.

She also took center stage in partisan battles with the Trump administration, including both impeachment proceedings and the House investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Even after stepping down as Democratic leader in 2022, Pelosi remained a behind-the-scenes force, bearing the title “speaker emerita” while continuing to raise money and advise party leaders.

Nancy Pelosi didn’t pick this moment by accident. Her retirement announcement comes just as California’s new redistricting plan, Proposition 50 — which she strongly supported — takes effect, likely cementing Democratic dominance in the state. The measure’s landslide approval may have been the final cue for her to bow out.
