WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump sharply rebuked congressional Democrats during his 2026 State of the Union address Tuesday night after many remained seated when he called on lawmakers to stand in support of prioritizing American citizens over illegal immigrants.
Speaking before a joint session of Congress, Trump framed the moment as a test of lawmakers’ core beliefs. “One of the great things about the State of the Union is how it gives Americans the chance to see clearly what their representatives really believe,” he said, urging members to rise if they agreed that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” A sustained ovation from Republicans followed, while Democrats largely remained in their seats.
Afterward, Trump pointedly chastised Democrats, saying, “Isn’t that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourself! Not standing up.” He repeated the admonishment as he called for an end to sanctuary cities and for stiffer penalties for officials who impede the removal of criminal noncitizens.
The exchange highlighted sharp partisan tensions at the Capitol, where the president delivered the longest State of the Union address in U.S. history, lasting more than 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Trump’s speech — aimed in large part at galvanizing support ahead of the midterm elections — also addressed border security and his administration’s legislative priorities. The moment underscored the enduring divides between the White House and Democrats over immigration policy and the role of the federal government.
Democratic lawmakers’ decision to remain seated coincided with walkouts and boycotts by some members who attended alternative protests, reflecting broader debates within the party about how best to respond to Trump’s agenda and rhetoric.
