President Donald Trump has warned he will not endorse any Republican senator who votes against the SAVE America Act, escalating pressure on GOP holdouts ahead of a key Senate vote.

What Trump said

Trump made the warning in a post on Truth Social, calling the legislation one of the most important in U.S. history.

He said he would “NEVER (EVER!) ENDORSE ANYONE” who votes against the bill and suggested that opponents could face political consequences in future campaigns.

What the bill does

The SAVE America Act, or Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote and tighten voter identification and election procedures.

The House has already passed a version of the bill. However, it faces significant hurdles in the Senate, including the likelihood of a Democratic filibuster.

According to Fox News, the president considers the bill one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in congressional history:

Trump has long pushed for stricter election laws — making election integrity a central pillar of his 2024 campaign — and has repeatedly questioned the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden.

The SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and impose stricter voter ID rules.

Trump said the bill also touches on issues including mail-in voting, transgender athletes and medical care for minors.

“No Men in Women’s Sports, No Transgender MUTILIZATION of our Children. 90% to 99% ISSUES ALL! Only sick, demented, or deranged people in the House or Senate could vote against THE SAVE AMERICA ACT. If they do, each one of these points, separately, will be used against the user in his/her political campaign for office – A guaranteed loss.”

Pressure campaign inside the GOP

Trump’s warning is part of a broader effort to unify Republicans behind the legislation.

He has made the bill a top legislative priority and has repeatedly signaled he is willing to withhold political support from members of his own party who oppose it.

Some Republican senators remain skeptical or opposed, creating internal divisions ahead of the vote.

Political stakes

Trump’s endorsement continues to carry significant influence in Republican primaries.

As a result, senators who vote against the bill could face Trump-backed challengers, and the vote is increasingly seen as a test of alignment with Trump’s agenda.

If they oppose this, I don’t want them anywhere near my Government.
