While some media outlets have portrayed Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill as a victim of police repression following his recent detention, others, including NBA legend Charles Barkley and ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, are questioning that narrative.
In an interview with Fox Sports 910 in Phoenix, Barkley expressed skepticism over how the incident was being covered. “I hate that we’re gonna throw it in the media because you know the guys are gonna quickly go to race, and it bothers me,” Barkley said. He pointed to the recent arrest of golfer Scottie Scheffler, who was detained during a misunderstanding at the PGA Championship, as an example of similar treatment for white athletes.
Barkley also criticized Hill’s handling of the situation, cautioning that celebrities should never use their fame to defuse such encounters. “The one thing you can’t do as a celebrity, you can’t say, ‘Do you know who I am?’ You say, ‘Yes, sir,’ cooperate 100%,” Barkley said. He further warned against jumping to conclusions about racism, noting the police report suggested Hill was uncooperative.
Stephen A. Smith echoed similar sentiments on his sports debate show, acknowledging the initial support for Hill but criticizing the wide receiver’s actions during the incident. “They tell you to roll down your window. My hands are on the steering wheel. That is not what Tyreek Hill did,” Smith remarked.

Hill has continued to call for the officer’s termination, but as more footage and commentary emerge, the debate over who was at fault continues to evolve.
