Florida Seeks To Ban Dogs From A Favorite Activity

-

It may seem crazy, but it might just save your dog's life.

Taking your dog for a drive can be one of the most fun experiences you can have with your dog. Those big floppy ears riding the wind and a long tongue wiggling around. It's sort of quintessential to see a doggy poke his or her head out of the window and enjoy the breeze. However, a new Florida bill seeks to put an end to the fun shared by  across the state.

Find out which automaker is being blamed for catalytic converter thefts here.

Essentially, the new law has a lot to do with how a dog is secured inside a vehicle, and to be fair there are a lot of options. Instead of letting the dog run around inside the car, owners are expected to transport animals in crates or have a restraining harness. Interestingly enough, it seems that being held onto by a passenger is also good enough for safety in the eyes of the state.

It might seem frivolous but it's honestly a very compassionate piece of legislation which would target a big problem for dogs. I remember driving around with my dog friend in my old truck and having him fall into the food or slam onto the dash at every stop. Could you even imagine how horrible a crash would be for any animal that wasn't restrained? On top of that the presence of dogs usually creates a higher likelihood for crashes as they like to jump around the car a lot. Overall, it seems like dog owners all over the state of should take this law, and its reasoning, into consideration next time they take their dogs out for a drive. We'll leave the open window fun to the cat people.

  1. i am dog lover, and agree with this bill. One of the most common causes of eye injuries in dogs is riding along with their head out of the window and getting hit in the eye with something.

  2. I’ve had quite a few dogs and all have been trained to behave in the car. They don’t put their heads out the window or jump around in the car. They are given a minute to look around (while we’re still in the driveway), and then they are given the command to lie down. There they stay until we arrive at our destination. Dogs need to be properly trained in order to keep both dog and the pet owner safe.

  3. I worked for a small animal veterinarian in the 1960’s and do consulting for veterinarians today. The vet I worked for in 1965 to 1968 always warned clients of the danger of having the dog loose in the car and especially letting them stick their heads out the window. Been true for a long time so it’s about time that legislation was enacted to help people who don’t seem to understand.

  4. This probably is a good idea but it’s not the business of government. Every law comes with colossal cost. I doubt that any self supporting taxpayer would be willing to pay additional taxes to monitor, issue citations and ensure that America’s judiciary fairly protects all these animals. Some things must be left to individual responsibility.

    • Agree 100%, Gene. The massive trend (promoted mostly by attention-seeking politicians, I’d say) of agreeing to gov’t controls and legalities around every aspect of life does not bode well for America.

  5. The government needs to butt out of all the areas of a free people’s life, they think they are in charge of everyone’s every minute of their life.
