Following The Money In The Republican Presidential Primary

Does money matter in campaigns?

We all know the story that Hillary Clinton significantly outraised candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential campaign, but the Donald pulled off the victory despite the financial disadvantage. However, nine times out of 10, the candidate who raises the most money wins.

Money allows a campaign to buy media, mail, phone calls, signs and bumper stickers and keep a grassroots team supplied. (RELATED: Trump Compliments Other GOP Candidates, Praising One In Particular)

That’s why the Federal Election Commission reports are so important in gauging how a candidate is doing. If there is no money, there is no message being delivered to the voters. Remember Fred Thompson’s campaign for president? Everyone was so excited that the former U.S. senator and former “Law & Order” star was jumping into the race. However, 30 days later, his presidential campaign was basically over because he did not raise significant dollars. In other words, his bid was all hat, no cattle.

Many thought the same thing was going to happen to Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis. His pre-launch maneuvers were brilliant, but the actual announcement was a flop. Now the FEC reports have been published, and DeSantis was the top fundraiser this quarter. He outraised Trump by $3 million. That means the money momentum is with DeSantis.

While many Trumpers claim that DeSantis is done due to recent polling data, they are being shortsighted. DeSantis will have the money to compete! (RELATED: Ron DeSantis Turns To Popular Wife To Reinvigorate Campaign)

Moreover, as GOP presidential candidates who are falling far behind in fundraising drop out of the race, their support will go to DeSantis, not Trump. How do I know this? If these voters were Trump supporters, they would already be with him. They are supporting an alternative to Trump, so they will migrate to the candidate who has the best chance of defeating him in the primary.

This presidential primary has just begun!
