Washington, D.C. – A man who reportedly masterminded a 1981 Brinks armored car robbery that left two Nanuet, N.Y., policemen and a security guard dead has been released from prison.
Mutulu Shakur, 72, was released on Dec. 16 from incarceration in a federal facility on compassionate grounds by the U.S. Parole Commission, reportedly because he is suffering from a terminal illness.
The onetime stepfather of slain rap mogul Tupac, the elder Shakur was part of a group that included members of the Black Liberation Army and other domestic terrorist organizations who killed Brinks guard Peter Paige and wounded guard Joseph Trombino during an armored car robbery on Oct. 20, 1981, in which $1.6 million was stolen.
Shortly thereafter, the co-conspirators jumped from the rear of a rented truck while trying to escape after being stopped at a police roadblock. Armed with high-powered weapons, they opened fire, fatally wounding Nyack Police Sgt. Edward O'Grady and Officer Waverly “Chipper” Brown and injuring Nyack Det. Arthur Keenan and Officer Brian Lennon.
Shakur's release has provoked outrage in the community where the deaths of the two law enforcement officers have not been forgotten. “How can a compassionate release be granted for someone who played a role in callously killing three people?” asked Rockland County Executive Ed Day, a former NYPD commander.
Day called Shakur's early release “disrespectful and horribly insulting to the families of those who have been killed who can only see their loved ones at a gravesite.”
Shakur eluded capture for six years, ending up on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. He was finally captured and convicted in federal court of charges ranging from running a criminal enterprise to ones stemming from the robbery and murders and was ordered to serve a sentence of 60 years.
Others involved in the 1981 robbery and murders included Judith Clark, who was paroled in 2019; David Gilbert, who was paroled earlier this year; and Kathy Boudin, a notorious radical and co-founder of the Weather Underground, a group that bombed U.S. government buildings to express opposition to the war in Southeast Asia.
Boudin pled guilty to charges of felony murder and robbery and was given a sentence of 20 years to life. She was paroled in 2003, eventually becoming an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and died in 2022.
Trombino, the guard wounded in the robbery of the Brinks armored car, would later be killed in another terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, when commercial airliners hijacked by Al Qaida operatives were used to level the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center.

justice perverted.
Be a real shame if he gets run over by reindeer, or a city bus.
Or a dump truck. Just scoop him up and toss him in.
Being terminally ill is no reason to let this POS out of jail. He should have been dead 1 week after conviction
Read about Kathy Boudins son. The SanFrancisco DA bankrolled by Soros. This cult group of robbers and killers is a cancer.
They always turn criminals back out on streets
And not a single one of the parole board was willing to take this ‘person’ home with them AND assume direct responsibility for him. Turn him loose on the rest of us with no compunction they did.
He can die in prison as easily as dying out of prison.
AND if he’s in a hurry they can help him is several ways. First coming to mind is old sparky.
He can die in Prison as well as on the streets. No feelings for the crooked.
Beyond disgusting. The two police officers and security guard were not given “compassionate release due to terminal illness” they were simply terminated. Shakur and the others showed no “compassion” for those murdered or their families. These days criminals are given more “compassion” than their victims and the honest public.
