The Biden Effect: National Party ID Flips as More Americans Now Republican

-

The latest Gallup poll of national party identification shows that after two decades of Democrat dominance under Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and , Republicans have jumped into the lead under a flailing President .

When asked to choose between Republicans or Democrats, Gallup finds 45 percent of Americans identify themselves as Republican or a Republican leaner, while 44 percent identify as Democrat or Democrat-leaning.

That's a drop from the 46 percent who identified as Democrats and 43 percent as Republicans last year.

It's the first time Republicans have led in nationwide party identification since 2003 when both parties were tied at 45 percent, and their first outright lead since 1991, when Republicans led Democrats 48 percent to 43 percent.

“The last time preferences were this closely divided was in 2011, with Democrats holding at least a three-percentage-point advantage in each year of the past decade,” Gallup reports.

“The stronger year for Republicans in 2022 was manifested in their party's winning control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Nationwide, more voters cast ballots for Republicans than Democratic U.S. House candidates last year by a margin of about three points,” Gallup notes.

The drop in support appears tied to widespread disapproval of Democrat President Joe Biden. Gallup finds Biden's job approval at just 40 percent among Americans, with 55 percent disapproving of Biden's job performance amid crippling inflation and shortages of consumer goods.

Biden's average approval rating over his term is just 46 percent, lower than every president since Harry Truman, other than Donald Trump, who averaged only 41 percent approval, and tied with Jimmy Carter.

  1. Polls mean nothing. I could take a poll right now and get any result I wanted. All I have to do is poll people who I know are liberal or conservative. Or, I could poll people in certain areas that I know lean one way or another.

  2. I guess the pollsters see things differently, but I think the scariest thing in these numbers is that 40% of Americans DO NOT DISapprove of President Joe Biden!!??? WHAT can they possibly APPROVE of???? WHAT positive thing has he achieved for the country???
