WASHINGTON — The National Park Service says investigators have concluded that the newly installed liner in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was deliberately slashed with a sharp knife or razor, bolstering federal officials’ assertion that the damage was an act of intentional vandalism rather than ordinary wear or accidental damage.
The finding comes after authorities temporarily drained portions of the Reflecting Pool to inspect extensive damage discovered shortly after the completion of a multimillion-dollar rehabilitation project. Federal officials have launched a criminal investigation into the incident and are seeking those responsible.
Park Service: Damage Was Intentional
According to the National Park Service, investigators determined that the punctures and tears in the synthetic liner were caused by “a sharp knife or razor,” ruling out the possibility that the damage resulted from environmental conditions or construction defects.
Officials have not publicly identified any suspects, but they say the nature of the cuts indicates deliberate human action.
The agency continues working with the U.S. Park Police and other federal law enforcement partners to determine who was responsible and whether additional acts of vandalism occurred elsewhere on the National Mall.
Damage Followed Major Renovation
The Reflecting Pool recently underwent a major renovation designed to modernize aging infrastructure while preserving one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
The rehabilitation included installation of a new waterproof liner, upgraded circulation systems, and improvements intended to extend the life of the nearly century-old memorial feature.
The discovery of cuts forced maintenance crews to partially drain the pool to inspect the extent of the damage and begin repairs.
Officials have not yet released a final estimate of repair costs.
Trump Administration Promises Tough Response
The incident has drawn significant attention from the Trump administration.
President Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro have both vowed to aggressively prosecute anyone responsible for damaging the Reflecting Pool or other federal monuments.

Trump has argued that vandalism targeting national landmarks should carry severe penalties, warning that offenders could face prison sentences under federal laws protecting government property.
The administration has characterized the case as part of a broader effort to protect historic monuments and federal property in the nation’s capital.
Political Debate Emerges
The Reflecting Pool investigation has also sparked political debate on Capitol Hill.
Tillis also raised broader questions about the administration’s sentencing priorities. The North Carolina Republican contrasted its pursuit of lengthy prison terms in recent vandalism cases — including the prosecution of a U.S. Olympian who has maintained he only touched the water — with Trump’s decision to pardon Jan. 6 defendants, including those convicted of assaulting police officers and vandalizing the Capitol.

“What freaking parallel universe did I just wake up in?” Tillis told reporters while criticizing the divergent approaches to criminal justice.
Investigation Continues
Federal authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the damaged liner.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing potential witnesses, and examining physical evidence collected from the scene as they attempt to identify those responsible.
The National Park Service has asked anyone with information about suspicious activity around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to contact the U.S. Park Police.
For now, officials say the evidence points to a deliberate act of vandalism.
With investigators concluding that the liner was intentionally cut using a sharp blade, the case has shifted from a maintenance issue to a criminal investigation involving one of the nation’s most recognizable public memorials.

ALL crimes of violence, whether against people or ‘things’, should be considered a major criminal act!
And the penalty should reflect that!
The lie that no one is bring up. Where are the inspection reports for the installation of the coating? I have inspected millions of square feet of coatings. The surface preparation is extremely important for all coatings in order for the coating to have the proper adhesion to the substrate. Why is not one talking about the inspection reports, the type of coating being used, the specifications for the surface preparation for the coating. My guess is thar since this was sole source work. The Contractor gave the United States a shabby job and Trump is protecting himself and is Contractor.
