Veteran actor James Handy, best known for roles in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” “The Rocketeer,” and dozens of television shows spanning nearly five decades, was fatally stabbed at a Los Angeles home this week.
The Los Angeles Police Department identified Handy, 81, as the victim of a fatal stabbing on Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. Officers responded to a report of “unknown trouble” shortly before 9:30 a.m. and discovered Handy suffering from a stab wound to the chest in the front yard of a residence. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the suspect, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, is the son of Handy’s longtime girlfriend and lived at the residence with both his mother and the actor. According to police, Gledhill placed a disturbing 911 call after the attack, allegedly telling dispatchers, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived, Gledhill reportedly flagged them down and informed them that he was the person they were looking for. He was arrested at the scene and booked on suspicion of murder. Bail was set at $2 million. Police have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The LAPD has characterized the incident as an isolated event and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
A Familiar Face Across Hollywood
While not a household name, Handy was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actors. Born in New York City, he launched his screen career in the late 1970s and amassed more than 150 film and television credits. Over the years, he appeared in major productions including “Unbreakable,” “Logan, “The Verdict,” “Arachnophobia,” “Alias,” “Law & Order,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” and numerous other television dramas. His final film appearance came in 2022’s blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Questions Remain
Investigators have not disclosed what led to the deadly confrontation. The suspect’s unusual religious-themed statement during the 911 call has fueled speculation, but authorities have released few additional details.
As detectives continue to piece together what happened inside the Tarzana home, the death of James Handy marks the tragic end of a long Hollywood career — and another high-profile homicide in a city increasingly grappling with concerns over violent crime.
The case remains under investigation.
