Rep. Cory Mills is facing a new federal investigation at a politically sensitive moment.
According to ABC News, the Justice Department has opened an inquiry into the Florida Republican, with investigators reportedly examining aspects of his finances. The department has not publicly confirmed the investigation, and its full scope remains unknown.
The reported probe adds another layer of scrutiny for Mills as he campaigns for another term in Congress.
Ethics investigation already underway
The reported DOJ inquiry comes while Mills is already the subject of a wide-ranging House Ethics Committee investigation.
The committee launched an investigative subcommittee last November to examine allegations that Mills violated campaign finance laws and engaged in sexual misconduct and dating violence. Mills has denied any wrongdoing.

Mills calls report a ‘witch hunt’
Mills responded forcefully after news of the reported federal investigation emerged, accusing the media of relying on anonymous sources to fuel a politically motivated attack.
“Imagine how desperate fake news must be to make a claim of DoJ investigation when even the DoJ has not confirmed or made official statements of such an investigation existing,” Mills wrote on social media. “The fake news ‘anonymous source’ political witch hunts are pathetic.”
The Justice Department has not issued any public statement confirming or denying the reported inquiry.
Political stakes rise
Mills, who represents Florida’s 7th Congressional District, was first elected in 2022 and serves on the House Armed Services and House Intelligence committees.

ABC News reported that MS NOW first disclosed the reported Justice Department investigation. Aside from indicating that investigators are examining Mills’ finances, few details about the inquiry have become public.
